We offer training on both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, and we have a highly qualified and dedicated team that supports the full spectrum of training and charter work done by Westline Aviation.

Our CEO Charlie Marais is one of a handful of instructors in South Africa who holds the post as a grade I designated flight examiner on both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, as appointed by the SACAA for the testing of private pilot’s license (PPL), commercial pilot license (CPL) and air transport pilot’s license (ATPL) flight tests. He is also one of very few FI-DFE instructors in the country on both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, allowing him to conduct initial flight instructor tests as well as renewals.

Pilot training in South Africa

Westline is situated in the heart of South Africa, blessed with excellent flying weather. We have over 300 days to fly and enjoy that which is our purpose. This saves a lot of money because frequent air time means less time spent at the school, which means fewer expenses in accomodation and travel.

Tempe Airport is self-regulated concerning air traffic control and the ground time is thus restricted to taxi and pre-take off checks. When flying in the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas you will find that a minimum of one third of all flying hours logged by students are actually spent on the ground. But not here; here you get, on average, two to three times more landings in per sortie, which means you go solo earlier and thus make further savings.

Bloemfontein caters for all the normal social needs, but we also have exquisite beauty in the countryside. Our nearby mountains and game farms are spectacular. But you are here to study and because of the quieter environment, your studies will be completed sooner and, again, you will spend less money in achieving your goal.

PPL and CPL training

Here at Westline there are no hidden costs. Our prices may look more expensive but we urge you to do the math and study what is included in our quotes. We list everything so that you are aware of the costs and can budget for them accordingly, with no nasty surprises.

We have been accused of being too disciplined but we believe discipline is the foundation of all successful industries and aviation particularly. We have professional and excellent relations with our students but we show respect and believe that discipline is the foundation of our relationships. We cherish our instructors’ professionalism; they take great care to make our students operational for the real world. Our policy is that our instructors must declare our students fit for exams. This holds true for PPL, CPL and instructors exams. Our methods are successful, just ask the students that partake in our programmes. We are dedicated to providing the necessary support to all our students so that nobody struggles.

Fixed-wing and helicopter training fleet

The Westline fleet includes five Cessna 172s, one Mooney, one Piper Cherokee, one Arrow, one Beechcraft Baron, one Robinson 44 helicopter and two Robinson 22 helicopters. All our aircraft are available for training, hire-and-fly and charter purposes. The fleet is rapidly expanding with approximately one new aircraft every quarter.

Pilot training, air charters and aviation courses

Westline offers pilot training courses, air charters as well as a number of safety courses. Pilot training courses include ground school, PPL, CPL, flight instructor’s rating, ATPL, night rating, instrument rating, multi-engine rating and NVG training.

Westline also offers a basic aerobatics course, advanced training (from our Wonderboom satellite base) and the initial turbine rating. In addition, the company provides advanced helicopter training courses such as game rating, sling rating, winch rating, mountain flying and low level tactical flying.

Apart from the flying courses, Westline Aviation hosts its own SACAA Online PPL examination centre. The company also assists in the validation of foreign licenses.
