Harmony is the latest light sport aircraft (LSA) produced by Evektor-Aerotechnik, a company based in the Czech Republic. The aircraft is used for cross country touring and training purposes.

Harmony LSA obtained US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval certification in 2011 and the first airplane was delivered to the US in the same year. The aircraft further received a special airworthiness certificate from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of Chile in May 2014.

Design and features of Harmony

The SportStar RTC aircraft is a two-seat light sport aircraft designed and manufactured by Evektor-Aerotechnik.

The Harmony LSA incorporates an advanced, all-metal, anodised and corrosion-proof airframe. The joints of the aircraft structure are riveted with mastic for long-lasting service.

The LSA features a new tapered wing design, enlarged rudder aerofoils and a tricycle landing gear. The wings house Vortex generators and two internal wing tanks with a capacity of 60l each. The aircraft dimensions include a length of 6.11m, height of 2.48m and wingspan of 9.25m.

Cockpit and avionics of the light sport aircraft

The spacious cockpit of Harmony offers 46.5in-wide shoulder room and additional legroom. It includes a Dynon SkyView 10in electronic flight instrument system (EFIS) and 7in engine monitoring system (EMS), integrated Dynon radio plus transponder and night visual flight rules (VFR) equipment package.

The cockpit is fitted with a new design instrument panel, adjustable pedals, press-button circuit breaker, nose wheel steering and combined starting switch and choke lever. It is covered by a tinted canopy that offers UV protection.

The avionics equipment includes an air speed indicator, altimeter, magnetic compass, vertical speed indicator, bank indicator, dual hydraulic brakes with four pumps, dual control sticks and mechanical flaps. The aircraft also comes fitted with longitudinal and lateral flaps and nose wheel control through push/pull rods as well as throttle control with friction lock.

Additional accessories constitute ground equipment, canopy cover, pilot operating handbook, maintenance manual, log book and a set of aircraft test records.

Harmony aircraft cabin details

The 1.18m-wide cabin of the Harmony LSA can accommodate two people. It features a baggage compartment offering a volume of 10.1ft³ that accommodates a maximum baggage weight of 25kg.

The cabin features a ventilation system with NACA inlets and canopy-side eye-ball vents. It integrates standard seats with low backrests and a deluxe, lined interior. It also comes with padded seat belt shoulder straps, side map pockets and armrests. It further includes an open and closed canopy alert system and a 12V auxiliary outlet.

Harmony aircraft engine and performance

“The cockpit is fitted with a new design instrument panel, adjustable pedals, press-button circuit breaker, nose wheel steering and combined starting switch and choke lever.”

The aircraft is powered by a Rotax 912 ULS engine, which generates up to 100hp power. The engine drives a Propuls AES 1700/3/R propeller. The aircraft is also offered with two more engine options, which are either a Rotax 914 turbo-charged 115hp engine or a Rotax 912iS/S2 100hp fuel-injected engine.

The Rotax 914 turbo-charged engine is intended for high altitude performance in mountainous or hot areas, whereas the Rotax 912 ULS normal aspirated engine offers standard performance and reduced weight.

The aircraft has an average fuel consumption of 15l an hour, a cruising speed of 204km/h, maximum speed of 222km/h and stall speed of 83km/h. It has a range of 1,300km (700nm) and a service ceiling of 15,500ft (4,720m) at a rate of climb of 5.2m/s.

The take-off and landing run of the aircraft are 190m and 180m, respectively. The empty weight is 311kg, the maximum takeoff weight is 600kg and the useful load capacity is 289kg.
